As promised, I will attempt to break down the steps on how I created this fun & easy mosaic creation.
You will need the following items:
5x7 inch canvas or you can make this any size you like
Black gesso or black paint
Chipboard – enough to cover the size of the canvas you have
Tissue – Tim Holtz or any tissue you would like to use
Distress Ink Pads – two or three colors
Stazon Black Ink Pad
Stamps – anything you would like to use. Word stamps are great as well.
Gloss Medium - Glossy Accents
Paint or gesso the canvas you are using. – Note – It doesn’t have to be black. The end result of this is whatever color you choose will become the faux grout of your canvas.
Cover the chipboard with the tissue using Matte Medium. Let dry thoroughly.
Cover parts of the tissue with the white gesso. This should push back some of the patterns on your tissue and create the illusion of the tissue being a part of the chipboard. This also creates a base that you can stamp on. Let dry.
Stamp the images you picked all over the surface. Use a heat gun to dry the ink. If something is too bold, take it back with a little white gesso again.
Cut this chipboard into the shapes you like such as squares or rectangles to create the tiles and lay them on top of your canvas. Lay out your pattern before you glue them down. This also gives you an idea of how many cuts you will need to cover the canvas.
Take a picture of your canvas from your phone or iPad so you can later lay the tiles down in the same order.
Apply two or three colors of Distress Inks to your tiles and then edge each of them in black to give them some definition.
Glue each tile to the canvas with Matte Medium. Use your phone image as the template for your lay-out. Be sure to leave an equal amount of space between each tile. The black gesso on the base of the canvas should show through as the grout.
Cover the entire canvas with Glossy Accents to seal the tiles in place. Leave overnight to dry on a flat surface.
